Field notes, market intelligence, methods, study records, and release documentation for the people building and hiring at the edge of AI deployment.

A publication earns authority by making its method, evidence, disagreement, and limits easier to inspect than its headline.

The FDE Benchmark v0.1: measuring forward-deployed engineering work

The launch publication for the indexed public draft: the construct, the E0–E5 evidence ladder, the three-layer outcome architecture, the shared work challenge design, governance and its first correction, and what this release does not claim.

Field standard

Everyone is an FDE now. The title tells you almost nothing.

The line is intentionally rhetorical, not a measured prevalence claim. As employers stretch the label across software engineering, deployment, reinvention, and frontline delivery, the defensible question is what work a person can actually prove.

Evidence design

Certification is the floor. Production evidence is the proof.

Training and certification establish access to knowledge. A stronger qualification record separates trained, certified, deployed, proven, and independently referenced evidence instead of collapsing them into one badge.

Operating model

A real FDE closes the field-to-product loop.

Forward deployment is not a one-way implementation handoff. The practitioner builds and runs inside the customer boundary, then turns field evidence into reusable product, evaluation, and research learning.

The hardest FDE skill is owning the boundary.

The hard part is not producing a polished demo. It is diagnosing the operating system around the model—data, controls, tools, workflows, people, acceptance conditions—and remaining accountable through production use.

The proof standard has to scale with it.

Firms are assembling forward-deployed workforces at industrial scale. LockedIn’s research direction is deliberately harder than a paper credential: resolve capability to hands-on work, measurable outcomes, independent corroboration, and—before an official credential—identity assurance.

Hiring footprint

Forward deployment is becoming a dedicated, international function.

OpenAI’s Forward Deployed Engineering team showed engineering, management, and technical-deployment openings across the United States and Asia-Pacific, including healthcare, legal, and semiconductor specializations.

Category formation

OpenAI made deployment a standalone operating business.

OpenAI announced a majority-controlled deployment company with more than $4 billion in initial investment and an agreement—subject to closing—to acquire Tomoro and its expected deployment team.

Salesforce pairs focused instruction with work-integrated onboarding.

Salesforce reported that its FDE team tripled over six months and described a six-week onboarding model combining technical instruction with on-the-job work; the growth statement has no published denominator.

Role archetype

The originating pattern connects field discovery back to product learning.

Palantir’s forward-deployed role combines direct problem discovery, architecture, application building over business-critical data, and a feedback loop that turns field learning into core-product improvements.

Transfer is part of the construct: the engineer should leave reusable product, platform, or operating knowledge—not only a customer-specific artifact.

Cross-employer pattern

The same operating pattern now appears beyond the originating firms.

Scale’s current GenAI FDE role combines daily technical customer work, rapid experiments, end-to-end full-stack delivery, production infrastructure, and influence on the product roadmap.

The title is cheap. The deployment record is not.

Across fifteen first-party records, forward deployment is becoming a formal operating model: discovery, hands-on build, production adoption, measurable outcomes, and field learning returned to the product. That convergence can nominate research questions. It cannot substitute for independent job analysis.
